Profile of Artist:

Alima Khatun got the inspiration of this art work from Kala Bhavan Shantiniketan, and started designing at the age of 14.

Alima Khatun comes from the land of Kantha stitch.

Kantha was dominantly a women’s art of undivided Bengal. Like muslin, the history has many stories woven by this running stitch. Traditionally, kantha patterns were not embossed on the cloth before embroidery. The art of the Kantha stitch has been passed down from mothers to daughters in Bengali households for centuries. In recent times, the realization of this cultural heritage intertwined with entrepreneurship skills has brought a new dawn to the village of Nanoor. This has not only revived the art form but has also presented the artists with an alternate source of livelihood.

Alima Khatun and her team of artisans present one the magnificent work of kantha work which is a unique example of craftsmanship in this hand embroidery which has aesthetic appeal.
